Versatile and Flexible Teaching Methods

Versatile teaching methods enable different kinds of learners to study successfully. When planning a course, you can consider from the beginning which alternative ways students can use to acquire competence. This allows learners to choose the study method that suits them best.

When selecting teaching methods, it is essential to consider how well they support the competence to be acquired and the specific needs of the student group. For example, group work, inquiry-based learning, information retrieval, or assignments using artificial intelligence require different study skills and preparedness. Study skills can also be practiced and supported alongside the subject matter.

Teaching can incorporate varied, multi‑channel learning and instructional methods. A course may include lectures, exercises, individual and group assignments, videos, and material exploration. Teaching situations can simultaneously acknowledge different sensory channels and learning preferences. This means presenting the subject in ways that allow students to learn by seeing, hearing, and doing:

  • A visual representation or image
  • Verbal explanation
  • Linking the content to experience or hands‑on activity

In simulation pedagogy, multi‑channel learning naturally takes place.

Flipped learning (also known as the flipped classroom) has also been found suitable for many learners: learning begins with exploring preparatory materials or assignments before the actual teaching session.

Learning Happens in Different Environments

Higher education learning takes place in various learning environments:

  • In-person teaching on campus
  • Independent and collaborative online learning
  • Practical training in working life

Each environment places its own demands on accessibility.

In-person settings. Key elements include clear spatial arrangements, functional support materials, and pedagogical choices that enable everyone’s participation.

Online and remote learning. These environments emphasize:

  • Technical reliability
  • Clear structure
  • Easy navigation
  • Accessible materials

Practical training (work placements). Choosing a suitable training place and ensuring adequate guidance at the workplace are essential considerations. It is important to ensure that the student has:

  • Necessary skills
  • Guidance
  • Support to perform tasks equally with others.
