Instruction for learning material production

Quality of the Learning Materials

When you create new open learning materials, take into account the Quality criteria formulated by the Open Science and Research Coordination:

  • Content. The content of high-quality open educational resources is reliable.
  • Learning and teaching methods. High-quality open educational resources enable the use of diverse ways to learn and teach.
  • Usability and accessibility. High-quality open educational resources are as easy to use as possible for everyone and in any situation.
  • Findability and sharing. High-quality open educational resources are easy to find, and the users know under which terms and conditions they can share them.
  • Lifecycle and adaptability. High-quality open educational resources are maintained and updated on a regular basis. In addition, other open resources and co-development practices are used in the production of the materials.

Jamk Open Learning Materials publishes material, which reaches at least the Basic level of these criteria. The author can improve the usability and visibility of the material by reaching the Advanced or Highly advanced levels in different dimensions of the criteria. Different criteria and their levels are described in this Table on quality criteria.

Accessibility of the Learning Material

The platform for Open Learning Materials has been designed accessible from the onset, and the platform follows the principles of accessibility as described in the Guide of the Open Science and Research Coordination. The author is responsible for using clear language, logical structures and describing the material in an unambigous way, so that the user will know for whom and for what purpose the material has been created. The administration of the platform helps in making the structure and visual elements of the material accessible.

In questions concerning accessibility of the platform, you can contact the Mrs. Mari Varonen (firstname.lastname@jamk.fi)

Sharing of the Open Learning Materials

All the material published on the platform is licensed with a Creative Common license, which allows their sharing and reuse within the limits of the license in question. More information on CC licenses here.

The administration of the platform adds the description of the material to the Library of Open Educational Resources (aoe.fi), where you can find more open learning materials. The material described in the Library of Open Education Resources are findable in the Finna.fi database.

Licensing the Learning Material

Following the policies and recommendations of open educational material, the platform uses open licensing in all the published material: Policy for Open Educational Resources. We use the Creative Commons licensing, and the preffered license for the material is the CC BY 4.0 Deed license. The material published earlier can have more restricted licenses, but only the CC BY and CC BY-SA licenses follow the guidelines of reusability and adaptability of the open learning materials. The license is a right of use and it does not remove the authorship or the copyright from the material. If the CC licensed material is reused or modified, the original material has to be clearly distinguishable from the modified version and the characteristic quality of the original must not be violated. Proper attribution to the original author must be given in all circumstances.

The content of the material has to be licensed with the same or more open license than the license of the entity. For instance, if the learning material in its entirety is licensed with the license CC BY, the individual material within the entity cannot have a more restricted license. Third-party material – both licensed and unlicensed – can be used as part of the learning material on the basis of the quotation right, as long as the extent of the citation is purposeful, fair practice is followed in quotation and the original author and work is clearly mentioned. The third-party material does not follow the license of the learning material, because only the original author can grant a license to a work.
