A Learning‑Enhancing Organizational Culture and Atmosphere

A positive atmosphere and organizational culture that promote learner participation and a sense of community support learning. Teachers play an important role in creating this. In a learning‑enhancing environment, students experience inclusion, opportunities for development, and a sense of belonging.

Positive interaction between teacher and student, as well as the student’s experience of being seen and heard, are important for learning.Respectful and positive encounters with students can take place in classroom situations, online learning, or for example in feedback on assignments. This also includes the teacher’s availability. Genuine encounters with students are at the core of a teacher’s work and learner‑centered teaching.

In a student group, the teacher can foster a communal and safe atmosphere through an encouraging and enabling attitude and by using inclusive teaching methods. Teachers can encourage students to engage in discussions and ask questions, and use teaching methods that support community building.

A student’s experience of belonging to the group and of being accepted and valued as they are forms the basis for a safe learning environment. This also means zero tolerance and immediate intervention in any discrimination or bullying. The feeling of belonging is an individual experience, so it is important to consider learning methods that take diverse students into account.

When using group work, it is essential to guide students in how to work together. In a safe environment that promotes well‑being and learning, students have the opportunity to try, fail, and develop. Teachers also have the right to experiment, learn new things, and experience well‑being in their work. When a teacher feels well, that well-being is reflected in the student group.
