3.6 Stages in a job seeking process

Job seeking as a process:

Finding a job needs a job seeking competence. This competence develops by experiences about looking for a work place and evaluating carefully, how you succeeded.

In Finland, people send a written job application to the employee when there is an open vacancy in an organization. In an advertisement of the open vacancy there is mentioned how to make a job application and where to send that. Nowadays, many job applications need to make electrically. Therefore, you need to have computer skills too.

In order to be successful when seeking a job you need to practice the skills related to that. At this page, you can find several assignments:

Assignment 1 (Your experiences finding a job)

  • Explain, after analyzing careful the job seeking steps, on what stages of the job seeking process in a previous picture do you have an experience?

  • Describe what kind of your experiences were in your previous job seeking process.

  • What, in your opinion was a good in a process

  • What kind of areas you need to practice. What were the challenges

 

Assignment 2: (skills needed when seeking a job)

  • How would you describe your computer skills?

  • If you don´t have computer skills, where can you practice those? (Libraries have free computers)

  • What kind of job seeking ways do you know?

  • Do you know local employees? If, not where can you find information about them?

 

Assignment 3 (Job application form)

  • Familiarize yourself with the job application form:  TyöhakemuspohjainEnglish

  • Make your own job application form. Use the previous form as an example. ( Making a job application is practiced in section 3.7 too)

 

Assignment 4 (Job advertisement)

Familiarize yourself with the advertisement at TE-service web pages: ilmoitus.

What is said in that advertisement about the following matters:

  • What kind of work is in a question?

  • What is the main purpose of this business organization?

  • What is the position where they are seeking a worker?

  • What do they tell about the competence that are needed to manage the work?

  • What kind of personal characters do they want from the worker?

  • What kind of education the worker has to have?

  • What kind of degree is required?

  • Who is the person to contact if you are interested in about this vacancy?

  • Explain how the job application process is proceeding.

 

The next step would be to prepare yourself in a job interview:

After studying your job application, the employee choose those applicants they want to interview.

It is a good idea to prepare yourself for the interview.

Interviews are usually approximately half an hour to one hour. The employee usually want to define some matters in your experience and ask extra questions in face to face.

Assignment 5:

  • Read carefully the instructions to the Job interview

  • Read carefully the instructions to the discussion with the employee  by phone
