The status of teaching as a profession

Discussions of organisations often include information about the roles people occupy within them. One aspect of roles that distinguishes organisations is the type of workers they employ. Professionals have a high degree of control over their work environments, high prestige and relatively high compensation compared to non-professionals. This designation is not without controversy and it is often at the foundation of many labour disputes. Whether teachers qualify as professionals is one of these debates.
