Travelling to Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is within an easy reach from the capital city Helsinki. You can get to Jyväskylä either by train or by long distance bus. If you are flying to Tampere instead of Helsinki, the IMG_0279_2distance is even shorter.

Train travel in Finland is operated by the national train company – VR. Tickets and timetable can be obtained via their website.

Long distance buses are operated by several different coach companies but all the timetables are conveniently available centrally. The timetable search on Matkahuolto’s website can be used to find the timetable information for all of the express, regular and commuter bus departures in Finland. The system contains information on 20,000 departures and more than 14,000 designated stops en route. Visit the website for more information.

The travel time by train from Helsinki is about 3,5 hours and by bus about 4,5 hours.


With a JAMKO membership and a student card you can receive student discounts on train and bus tickets. The prices vary according to the time of the day and how long in advance you purchase the tickets. The earlier you book them, the cheaper they will be. If you book them 60 days before travelling, the advance tickets will be significantly cheaper. Trains during the rush hours and weekends are more expensive than tickets during the day and in the middle of the week.


Travel within Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is a compact city and you can either walk or bike almost everywhere. If you need a bike for a short while, you can rent one if needed.
